About Us

The Program for Automotive Labor and Education is a unique partnership of industry, labor, education, training, workforce development and government that is dedicated to sustaining and improving the quality of the automotive workforce in North America’s automotive manufacturing and engineering center. The Program is made possible by support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and the Mid-Michigan Innovation Team/U.S. Department of Labor Workforce Innovation for Regional Economic Development (WIRED) initiative.

The motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts manufacturing industry is the largest manufacturing industry in the United States, both in terms of employment and output. The massive restructuring of the Detroit Three and many large suppliers represents the downsizing of the traditional U.S. auto industry as well as the retirement of an entire generation of automotive employees. “Baby boomer” automotive production, skilled trades and salary employees are leaving (and will leave) in such numbers that the companies must still hire many thousands of new employees in the years ahead.

The challenges of turning over an entire workforce to produce completely new products in an advanced manufacturing environment are outlined in detail in CAR’s research report, “Beyond the Big Leave: The Future of U.S. Automotive Human Resources” The Program for Automotive Labor and Education supports industry, educators and other stakeholders as they face these challenges and provides a forum for those interested in the future automotive workforce to discuss these issues. Program members will:

  • Gain access to key decision-makers and experts in the field of automotive workforce development
  • Share best practices in automotive workforce development
  • Take part in regular Program meetings held at automotive company headquarters, plants and research and development sites
  • Network with other individuals and organizations interested in automotive workforce development
  • Guide the Program’s research, outreach and special projects
  • Tap into CAR’s broad industry intelligence, data and research initiatives
